Pink Dot and the Arguments Against It

To sum up Pink Dot in one word: amazing.

For those who do not know what Pink Dot is all about, it is a non-profit movement who stands for our fellow LGBT Singaporeans.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to experience and be part of the meaningful cause and honestly, it was the best decision I ever made in my 16 years of life.

Despite the massive crowd and stuffiness, the atmosphere was so vibrant I couldn't stop smiling! I've never been to a place happier than this, everyone was so lovely it felt warmer than home.

All my life, I've always known that the LGBT community is one of the best people around and this view has not changed since. I met families who were giving out free food and drinks and LOTS OF DOGS. *Must resist the urge to touch every single dog that crosses my path.*

I don't want to bore all of you with how amazing the experience was so pictures first and I'll get to the reason why I really made a blog post about it.

I bought a pink shirt just for this event and I know I'll probably only wear it once... oh the sacrifices I make for pink dot.

I understand that there are many out there who are against the LGBT community, hence, I made this blog post to reason with their arguments.

I'll be posting the comments that they had left on yahoo news, which you can see HERE.

1) "Who says LGBT is OK and then other are not?" - quote of 2016

This is the stupidest argument against the LGBT community to date.

"Homosexuality is unnatural, hence, it is a sexual deviant like pedophilia, bestiality etc"

Homosexuality is in fact, very natural. It happens in the animal kingdom like in dolphins, giraffes, penguins and so on.

The big difference between homosexuality and pedophilia /bestiality is that homosexuality is between two willing parties who actually knows what they are doing.

While pedophilia is harmful. You cannot expect a child to know what is happening to them, they are not developed enough to make informed choices. Are you telling me that you'd be okay with a grown adult coming to your child saying
"GIVE ME RIGHTS AND FREEDOM TO F^CK YOUR CHILD"

"This is who we are and how we want to live our life"
But is this what the child or the animal want? Are you going to deny that bestiality is animal abuse? How are you to justify bestiality when animals are not capable of talking?

2) LGBT is a Mental Illness/Problem/Disorder

"I have nothing against LGBT.........-insert hateful comments about their lifestyle-"

So are you against or are you not? Gosh, why are heterosexuals so confused?

As I've said earlier, homosexuality does occur in animals and in fact in more than 1,500 species, including humans.

Homophobia occurs in only one.

Which one is not natural?

Besides, if homosexuality is a mental problem/sickness because it is taking over what is natural then you should get off your phone cause God certainly didn't create phones. Also, you should avoid any non-natural medicines. And find a nice cave while you're at it since God wasn't the one who built your house.

"a genetic, birth defect or inherent weakness which under certain untoward environments, twist a person into this way and become abnormal"

"asocial eloquence, genetic malformations and non-human pollution"

"A birth defect is usually recognized as a physical mutation that impedes the person (but not always) or a mental or cognitive issue that causes problems with development, social interactions, learning capabilities etc."

There is nothing abnormal about a child who is born and turns out to have a sexual orientation that is not heteronormative. Other than having a different sex preference, there isn't anything about them that makes them different from us.

The general ''norm" doesn't dictate automatically that anything else is abnormal or wrong or a disorder/defect.

Most of the population in Singapore has black/brown eyes. So if some people have blue eyes, does this mean it's a birth defect? After all, having blue eyes is outside the norm.

3) It Is a Sin/ Against the Bible

Oh, I get this a lot from friends who oppose Pink Dot.

But the bible also stated that one should not judge nor condemn others.

Matthew 7:4
How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?

Romans 2:1
You therefore have no excuse, you who pass judgment on another. For on whatever grounds you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

Luke 3:7
"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

If you still insist that your God is against homosexuality then, by all means, believe in what you believe in. But don't force your religious views on others.

4) A Child Needs to Have 1 Mother and 1 Father

The thing is, 1 mother and 1 father, 2 mothers or 2 fathers, they will still love their child the same.

Does having 2 mothers/2 fathers = lesser care and affection?

There is no evidence that children are psychologically harmed by having two dads or two moms.

And it is safe to assume that gay parents would make great parents since they are required to go through a lot of obstacles to get one: e.g adoption

5) They Contribute To the Low-Birth Rates

Oh dear, how about infertile heterosexuals? Or elderly couples who cannot produce children? Should they be denied their rights then?

Hence, The Conclusion Is,

I understand that there are much more reasons as to why people may oppose to the LGBT community.

However, why do people feel the need to segregate their rights from the rest of society?

Why do we label people? Why do we let these labels stop us from getting along with one another? Labels should for items, not for humans.

In my honest opinion, most of these arguments are just baseless reasons to justify their homophobia. Yet they had done nothing to you, so why are you so obsessed with their sexual life, going to great lengths to spread your negative comments and express your hate?

For my fellow LGBT friends out there who are afraid of simply being who you are, afraid of the judgment you may receive,

you're NOT alone.

And to heterosexuals who support LGBT rights, it does not make us heroes or any more superior, it just makes you a decent human being.
I am Straight
I am Gay
I am Bisexual
I am transgender
I am pan sexual
I am human.
